The funding will support the purchase of 3,400 busses for 530 school districts.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced the latest release of funding to update school bus fleets for underserved school communities. The grants will support replacing aging buses with newer electric models.
The agency received a $5 billion allotment for bus update grants in 2021, and this fiscal year they will distribute $900 million of this. This funding will allow 530 school districts to purchase around 3,400 electric school buses, with 67 percent servicing low income, tribal, and rural communities.
“This announcement is not just about clean school buses. It’s about the bigger picture. We are improving air quality for our children, reducing greenhouse gas pollution, and expanding our nation’s leadership in developing the clean vehicles of the future,” EPA Administrator Michael Regan said. “With increasing demand for electric school buses, we’ll see the development of new good-paying manufacturing jobs and investment in local businesses.”
